Want a New Habit to Stick? Start Smaller.

You do not need to overhaul your whole day to build a better habit. Start with one small action you can repeat, even when work is busy.

That is the idea behind the 1% rule for new habits: make the first step manageable enough to practise consistently. Small actions can move you towards the way you want to think, work and perform.

The 1% rule is a useful way to think about starting small. It is not a demand to improve by exactly one per cent every day or get it right every time. The aim is to choose a behaviour that fits into real life and give it repeated practice.

Why small, repeated actions matter

A goal such as “be more organised” gives you direction; it does not tell you what to do in the moment. A clear, small action does. For example: before opening email each morning, write down the one priority that needs your attention first.

Habit research points to the value of repeating a behaviour in a consistent context. In a real-world study, people practised a chosen behaviour in the same setting, and its automaticity increased over time. The pace varied between people and behaviours. Read Lally and colleagues’ habit-formation study for more detail.

Consistency matters more than a dramatic burst of motivation. Repetition gives you practice in the situations where you want the new behaviour to show up.

Choose one small action to practise

Give a go this simple process:

  1. Name the situation. Choose a moment when you want to respond differently, such as starting your workday or entering a meeting.
  2. Pick one small action. For example, take a breath before replying, ask one clarifying question or write down your key priority.
  3. Attach it to a cue. Link the action to something that already happens: “After I open my laptop, I will choose my first priority.”
  4. Make it easy to repeat. Keep the first step brief and prepare what you need in advance.
  5. Notice your progress. At the end of the day, reflect on when you practised and what helped. If you miss a day, return to the action at the next opportunity.

Build change that fits real life

When people want to change too many habits at once, the plan can become another source of pressure. Focusing on one to three behaviours gives you room to practise, reflect and adjust as life and work change around you.
